This book was written in 2002 and Carolyn Brown's writing has come a long way since then. The plot was good but the execution was lacking and an editor was definitely needed. In one instance, a woman dismounted from her horse and then asked a man for assistance in dismounting. Hmm. The dialogue of the little girl, Molly, was just plain irritating. Ms. Brown has grandchildren so it made me wonder if she had actually paid any attention to them as three year olds. And the dog's 'thoughts' actually had my eyes rolling in my head so much it made me dizzy. The heroine came from a wealthy southern plantation with many servants and even her own personal maid, yet she could cook, sew, and clean without breaking a sweat. Wowza. All in all, I think this book is better suited for young teens. For those interested: There are no language or sexual situations to offend any readers.

I read this book for a second time in order to write this review with the book fresh in my mind. But I have to say that is was a totally forgettable book. As several other reviews state this is more for a young teen who is just discovering the historical romance genre. The plot was simplistic and predictable. I found no angst, no sexual tension, which I like in the books I read. As someone who bakes bread, makes meals from scratch, sews clothes and does all her own housework I found that this woman was portrayed as a superwoman, especially working on the western frontier with no modern appliances. She accomplished more in one day than many women do in a five-day workweek. Emma was way ahead of her time with her liberated opinions and desires, unrealistic. I am sure some do enjoy this author's work, but it was just not my taste.

Our heroine has just run away from home. Her father has chosen a husband for her because he thinks she has taken too long to find one herself. Emma cannot stand the man her father has chosen so she runs away to the newly opened Oklahoma Territory. Knowing that her father will try to trace her and stop her Emma is instantly suspicious when the sheriff of the small town where she leaves the train starts asking her questions. Not seeing any other way out Emma turns to the stranger in front of her and asks him to help her spin her tall tale. The stranger, named Jed Thomas helps, but the sheriff doesn't buy it and they have to follow through on their bluff - but their bluff was that Emma was the stranger's mail-order bride! The sheriff decides that since he is the Justice of the Peace he will just marry them to be sure they are telling the truth. This is one fun story. Jed and Emma have quite a trial ahead of them. They are surrounded by a dozen or more fun characters that you get to meet up with in this and the other books in this series. Carolyn Brown does an excellent job with this series and I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys historical romances.

This is the first book in the series of four friends two of whom are sisters. It takes place in Texas Oklahoma Indian Territory and is a book that is fun to read and the characters in this book intertwine with the other three books. If you are looking for a book that is full of love and friendship. this book is one of those and you need to read the other three. It is one of those that you want to find out what happens next.

This is by far my favorite book by this author. Perhaps I identify with the main character because I was born and raised in that area and know the locations well. She even sounds like the gals I know! I found myself assigning voices with Southern accents to Trudy and her cousins as I read the book, which made it even more fun. What a good lesson on not judging people too. This is a beautiful love story and I was sorry to reach the end. I've already recommended this book to several friends.

I love Carolyn Brown books. They may not start off like I'm going to love them but I always do love them in the end. This book is another great one. I loved Jed and Emma, I loved the story as it unfolded and they found their HEA. She writes so well that you feel as if her characters are real people and she is just telling you what happened in their lives. Please keep writing, Mrs. Brown, and I will keep reading.

For the most part I love Carolyn Brown's books. Unlike the one I read a week or so ago, this one was great. The story was told without the bad language I encountered in the other book. A runaway who marries to escape the sheriff and being sent home. She finds herself as far from a Louisiana plantation as is possible. A rough built cabin built after the land rush in Oklahoma with four children to take care of. The ups and downs of the heroine are enjoyable, with the usual happy ending.

Jed and Emma's story is well written. I couldn't put down this book once I started reading it. An old fashioned take of a love that turns out to be true. I loved the real characters and Buster. I was glad they had a root cellar and what a surprise Emma turned out to be . A Great author.
