Lets try this again, apparently my first attempt, although 100% clean was not acceptable, so I'll revise a bit....I'm giving this 5 stars because the book is absolutely worth it and poor shipping (see below) should not effect the review of the actual book. Flipping through the books pages brings back so many memories and it was really nice seeing clean images of classic art. I've mostly only skimmed though cover to cover focusing on the art, but I definitely did stop to read some of the entries as well. Next I'll go through reading everything... except maybe the 4e abomination section lol.Bottom line, if you are a long time player or even a short timer who likes current and prior edition art, along with some info about it, then this is a book for you!Now about the issues... I just received my second book. First one arrive two days ago and I was excited to look it over that evening. That is until I opened the shipping box and found it sitting face down on the bare cardboard with 4 bubble packs, two of which were completely flat, protecting it. The book, assuming that it was like new when packaged was allowed to slide around inside the box. As a result both covers were scratched up and all the corners were smashed in. To be honest, it looked more like someone kicked it around on the floor before chucking it into the box.I called Amazon the next morning and the seemingly annoyed service rep (passing judgement on the product line perhaps?) excepted my return request and issued a replacement shipped next day. Big plus, and I was once again excited to get a great new book full of D&D art!The replacement arrived today, and upon opening I found that it was packaged the same way, except this time all four bubble packs had air in them. But since it was still shipped in a (slightly) oversized box without proper padding taking up the space, it was allowed to slide around on the cardboard. I have bought books elsewhere and the packaging far better than this.Over all the second one is in better shape but the face of the cover is scratched up more than should reasonably be expectable for a new book. There is also a crease across the entire binding passing through the U and N and a gouge on the front cover below "Newman."Simply placing the book in a plastic bag or wrapping it in a soft foam will prevent the scratching. Not to mentioned that this is a very heavy book, 4 little plastic air bubbles do not take up the dead space in the box, nor are they sufficient to make it through shipping companies with something this heavy constantly pounding against them. I've always had great experiences with Amazon so I wrote the first one off as a fluke, but twice, in a row, on the same product??Lessons learned I guess, this book is worth the asking price IMO, next time I decide to buy a book full of pretty pictures, that also has a really nice cover, I'll do so in a walk in, where I can physically see it before handing over my money.

This is a massive book with lots of art. But it is not the D and D art book i was hoping for. None of my favourite pieces from 1st edition are in here. That's because it is a history of the TSR company and specifically the D and D franchise and not a book dedicated solely to art.As a history of the company it's pretty good. Especially the first chapter which details the origins of TSR and is a detailed account. From there the details become a bit more sparse, mostly involving product releases, how well they sold, staff changes and the companies financial highs and woes.The history book covers not only the rulebooks but also highlights some of the notable video games released, merchandise, film and television endeavors accompanied with art and photographs of some of these..As far as the art goes, there is a lot of it. ALL the cover art is here. And a few novel covers, promotional pieces, calender art and a smattering of art from inside the books as well. Every edition is covered.But if you're looking for a book with loads of illustrations from inside the books you will be disappointed. No Lord Soth, no drow from fiend folio, none of the great black and white illustrations from either survival guides, etc. etc. That being said, i did enjoy reading it, and there is a ton of art here. I just would have preferred no words and all art.If you're looking for a fairly comprehensive history of the franchise and TSR with a boatload of colour art to go along with it, i'd say this book is for you. If you are looking for a book solely dedicated to art and are looking for specific pieces that are inside the many books, i'd say skip it.

Loved this book until I went to go wrap it as a gift and I noticed all of the damage on the back, really disappointed.

I recently purchased the "Dungeons & Dragons Art and Arcana A Visual History" and am completely in awe of the breadth and scope of this tome. Quite easily the definitive text on the topic, this novel has painstakingly paid attention to every detail mapping the course of the D&D comet through its forty-plus years in existence. As a forty-something who grew up with and around D&D, I found this book was wonderful in identifying the arc of D&D from inception, acclaim, controversy, criticism, and focus towards the future. Ever wonder at how many versions of D&D exist and what each version attempted to address? Did you know Pathfinder was a Paizo creation which capitalized on the Open Gaming License agreement and wasn't a part of the TSR/Wizards of the Coast family? Curious how D&D survived (and succeeded) when table-top games were challenged by the digital age? Interested in the evolution through artwork of some iconic monsters such as the Beholder, Orc, Roper, or dragons? Wonder how D&D was changed or forced to evolve when misguided groups in the 80's fell upon the idea that D&D was a "gateway to Satan" or drugs? All of these and so many more topics were researched by the authors and provided in an informative and visual format which will allow me to more than hold my own in conversations about the game or counter mis-remembered comments by critics who begin their conversation with "well, back in the day..." Thanks to the authors Michael Wittwer, Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson, and Sam Witwer for the countless hours spent researching the material which comprises this book. Thanks for touching that dormant spark of "Geekiness" which I needed rekindled. In short--thanks for the re-remembered memories.
