I worked for Dodge County at the time of the Nebraska outbreak, and the lawsuits. St that time there was quite a bit of gossip, but no facts and I do not like to base any decisions or thoughts on hearsay, it was important for me to read this book when I found out it existed. One of the victim's daughter told me about it in a discussion on regards to the hospital, and it was confirmed by a old classmate. I went to work at FAMC in August of 2009 until March 2012, and surprisingly never heard any talk of this the entire time I worked there. Still kept very hush-hush.It was interesting to get the facts from Mrs McKnight experience and the entire legal process from Mr Bennington. It is so sad that all the victims were treated the way they were and had to go through all that they did on top of having cancer and having to fight that deadly disease. My year hurts for them all. Dodge county and the State of Nebraska really let them down, as well as FAMC, Dr Jahved and Linda Prochaska.

You might think that something like this could only happen in Third World countries, where medical supplies are scarce and expensive. You would be wrong. You might think that a physician trained at some of the finest hospitals the US has to offer, a physician Board Certified in Hematology, would never in a million years allow such a thing to happen in his clinic. You would be wrong. You would think that any hospital in the United States would go to great lengths to insure the proper delivery of medicine in facilities which they own. You would be wrong. You would think that somebody, somewhere would have done something to prevent such a thing from ever happening. You would be wrong there too.You might think as you read throughA Never Event that you are reading a script for something like CSI, but you would be wrong. This is a true story.A Never Event: Exposing the Largest Outbreak of Hepatitis C in American Healthcare History is the story of something that should never have happened in a nation with the finest health care in the world. Well written and documented, this is a must read for everyone who uses our medical system!Highly recommended

A Doctor's motto should be "First, do no harm". This doctor does the exact opposite. The book is reasonably well laid out and written and I did appreciate each time the author(s) pointed out where they had given various defendents of the law suits time to read and ask for edits in the material. At the same time just from the other outbreaks mentioned at the end it seems that this is not something that is going to go away; its going to keep recurring regardless of the intentions of these patients, the hospital or any other of those involved.Hopefully anyone reading this book will at least learn to be their own health advocate and refuse the types of incorrect procedures written about in A Never Event. I had a hard time believing so many patients, even 20 or more years ago, didn't refuse to be injected with syringes they could see were already used, or refuse the saline that is described as "cloudy, with particles floating in it by days end, tinged slightly pink".

.....but it did and dozens of lives were ruined (or ended) because of medical malpractice and incompetence. I was a dialysis nurse for many years and I have a hard time comprehending how this much nursing and medical malpractice could continue over such an extended period of time, culminating in the largest outbreak of hepatitis-C in this country. This is an excellent read, written for the general public, easy to follow and understand. It should serve as a wake up call to everyone to never take for granted that medical procedures are never to be questioned by those on the receiving end of them. It is a cautionary tale that it behooves everyone to be vigilant and informed about what procedures they will be undergoing and to be observant of personnel involved. It is to the everlasting shame of the medical community responsible for policing its own that the physician whose negligence caused this heartbreak, not only successfully fled to his own country, but he later became an important "medical big wig" in his own country. I could not put this book down.

This title was a selection for my book group, and I approached reading it with dread that it would be so steeped in medical jargon that I would get lost. This is definitely not the case. The authors used just the right blend of medical facts with the humanity of the patients involved. Discussion and interest at the book group was stimulating. Many husbands came with wives in the hope of unnderstanding how this "never event" happened. The book includes a useful timeline of the Nebraska Hepatitis C Outbreak and information about Hepatitis C. Read it on your own or make it a book group selection--just read it.
