PreS-Gr 2- In Big Lunch, Pete decides to make a sandwich. Of course, the more he adds, the bigger it becomes. This is a good thing because he is really, really hungry. He forgets to remove the wrappers and adds cans, jars, and boxes to the ever-teetering tower of items. As he piles on the food, children's giggles will grow right along with the expanding "sandwich." Once it becomes too big for the small cat to consume, he must think of a clever solution to his dilemma, which he does with a little help from his friends. In Play Ball!, Pete is baseball ready and his team, the Rocks, are facing the Rolls in a big game. The players warm up and, when the game is over, both sides greet one another with high fives. Even though Pete does not play his best game, he has a good attitude about making mistakes and not being sad about errors he made. This is a great title to spark a discussion about sportsmanship. In both books, simple cartoon art in bold colors and large text make the books a treat for beginning readers.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TNα(c) Copyright 2013. Got these for my daughter to give to her preschool class as gifts. They love some Pete the Cat and you could not beat this price for six books. The kids bring them to class and want to read them every day now. Anything that promotes reading and learning is great in my opinion, GOD KNOWS we have enough dumb people in America as it is. Don't be a dummy: promote a love of reading, give books as gifts to EVERYONE. Read to your kids every night. Read with emphasis and a silly voice to the little ones and read to the old people that can't see anymore.
The thing I like most about P the C books is the way older kids can read them for themselves and adults can read them to smaller children. The lessons taught have meaning for any child between 2 1/2 and 6-7 ish.In this one, the lesson is about sharing with friends--an excellent lesson. Pete builds a sandwich that's too big for him to eat alone, so his solution is to invite his friends over for lunch.Anyone familiar with the P the C series will find this a typical tale. It's a good one because any child can relate to lunch. In this regard it's better than Pete Plays Ball because that definitely has concepts not familiar to every child.
My 2 1/2 year old son loves this book (and Pete the cat). He is already starting to read, and is well ahead of the curve. This book (and series) makes learning to read fun for him and has been a great tool for his development. Wonderful product from a wonderful product line!
There are lots of "My First level, I Can Read!" books, but the Pete-the-Cat ones are our favorites. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, and the Berenstain Bears, but his groovy cool factor moves him to the top of the list.Unlike some of the "I Can Read" books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are sensible, and groovy. Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That's a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively. The "message" if you want to call it that, of this book is that when you build a sandwich that's way too big for one, well just call a few buddies and have them come over to share. That works for me.This is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as "set worthy" and we've been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.
My 4 year old loves his Pete books, and he is learning to read with them. I can point to the simple words and he says them. He keeps pointing at the pictures of the other ones and asking me to get them.
Our son really enjoys all the books by James Dean. You can tell as a beginning reader that by the end of the book, he’s reading the harder words very easily. We get every one that comes out. Very very pleased !
This is my 3 year old daughter's favorite Pete book. It has easy to read sentences and wonderful pictures to go along with the story. She's at the age where she can remember a story if she's heard it a few times and this is one that she loves to "read" along with me. Pete is sending another great message in this book about sharing and thinking about how hungry you are before you get out the food you think you can eat. I also love that Pete makes pretty nutritious food choices.
This was the first Pete The Cat book I ever bought. It was because of this book with this Crazy Groovy Cool cat is the reason I have lots of Pete The Cat books in my private library. Even though there are several books that are better, Preschoolers still enjoy hearing this story. In this book Pete is soooo hungry, but he made such a large sandwich he invited his friends over to share his lunch. Awww, now wasn't that nice?
