When I decided to take on the responsibility of librarian at my church, I naturally sought out the most helpful books on the subject of church librarianship. Somewhat surprisingly, what I found were slim pickings indeed. The most promising title I found was this one, by Betty McMichael, which I was finally able to obtain through interlibrary loan. Since this third edition dates back to 1998, I obviously knew that it wasn't going to be on the cutting edge in terms of technology, but it still has plenty of great advice and examples for a beginning church librarian like me. Some of the chapters are quite outdated, which is unfortunate in a way because McMichael goes into great detail (with plenty of example images) for such things as cataloging books the old-fashioned way; even the new media she talks about has now become old media. One of the strengths of this book, though, is the author's emphasis on making the library a vital part of the church ministry - and that's something that will never become outdated.In essence, this book discusses both the practical and the spiritual aspects of building and/or growing a church library. The author emphasizes the importance of the library's location in terms of attracting church patrons, lists a number of tools and resources a church librarian might need, provides tips on securing adequate financing for books and supplies, describes the kind of work flow a church librarian will need to adopt, and offers up a great deal of information on the proper shelving and classification of all types of library items. I found her enumeration of relevant Dewey call numbers for religion and related subjects particularly helpful - even though I'm sure there have been some minor changes to that classification scheme in the years since the most recent edition of this book was published.McMichael doesn't just rely on her own experience, as she frequently cites the results of a survey she conducted among church libraries both big and small. That helps make this book useful to all church librarians. Whether you're blessed with a thriving library with lots of traffic or faced with the daunting task of starting a library in a small little room far away from the sanctuary, you're sure to find something useful in the pages of this book. McMichael's added emphasis on the spiritual and social aspects of church librarianship really helps you to stop and rethink the very essence of the job and the potential role you can play in the spiritual growth of your church.
Just as advertised. Helpful book for ideas for smaller church libraries (or larger ones) Gives many ideas for promoting the library and encouraging people to take advantage of their library. Also explains the job of church librarians and her helpers.
A little outdated, but many things in church libraries are that way so there is still much useful information here.

This edition of the book is from 1998, but I don't think it's changed much since the 1987 edition. Still, it's a valuable help for a church librarian.It's cheerful and detailed.
This was a very helpful book for new librarians.
Betty McMichael's book. "The Church Librarian's Handbook" is no longer available. Neither the author nor the publisher have copies. I have spent at least four hours on the Internet searching unsuccessfully for copies. I do think the posted price for a used copy is highway robbery, but that is my personal opinion. I finally wrote to Mrs. McMichael who assured me Baker Publishing had no intention of reissuing this excellent resource. It is a shame, since I have suggested it to many new librarians and would like to continue to do so.
