I am not totally sure why I enjoyed this book about the early years of car touring so much. The writer is very good at placing the specific history in the context of the changing attitudes and lifestyles of the times, which is big part of the appeal. The topic is also something that I am really interested in (history of roadside culture). Books like this always push me forward in terms of learning more about modern consumerism. I guess I am slowly trying to render our current consumer-based lifestyle a little more transparent in terms of what it all means and how it all works. Seems to be a long term project. Oh yeh, I recently took a long bike tour and it was fun to compare early car touring with modern bike touring. Enough similarities to perk my interest, except of course in a car you don't have to pedal! I also enjoyed Warren James Belasco's book about health-food "Appetite for Change."
