Rick Campbell added even more intrigue and seat of one’s pants action in this short story, Power Play.His expertise of the world of Naval submarine warfare shines brightly in all his stories and he is a kind enough author to translate the technical parts for the fans who have not lived that life.His use of the timeline and characters he has created is amazing. The reader can even become invested in the lives of the bad guys, thanks to Mr. Campbell’s character development.The only possible negative would be the abrupt ending to the story, but it is rectified by the preview of the upcoming book beginning on the next page.I highly recommend this book series to anybody that enjoys a great thriller!
This is not a "short story" - it's a beginning of a story. Probably just a way to offer an inexpensive Kindle "book" with the idea that you'll buy some of his other books. In itself, that's not wrong but advertising that it's a "short story" is wrong.
Like all of Campbell's books this short story is really great. It is a wonderful run-up to his book treason which should be out in March, which I have had the opportunity to read early. You will love it . It is action-packed from the very beginning . It keeps you in suspense and it has all of the same characters and many more. I highly recommend you buy the book Treason when it comes out.
Rick Campbell continues to deliver heart pounding adventure under the seas. Based upon his knowledge aboard US Navy submarines and his knowledge of the Russian subs, you feel as if you are in the story. It serves as a nice bridge between his last hit and the next one. Can't wait to read his next adventure. Keep them coming Rick!
This is a good short story , and it is written very well. Expect the same thrill, details, and naval lingo from Rick's other stories. The only criticism is that it was done to bridge two books, but it feels a bit rushed; and I think the reason for that is the story wasn't planned, but rather introduced to bridge the time until the next book. Don't get me wrong the material is pretty good, but it seems a bit off at times. Maybe is just because I've never read a short story from Rick before.
This short story is the prequel to Rick Campbell's upcoming book, Treason. It pick ups where Blackmail leaves off, with the Russians figuring out what to do after their defeat. Sixteen chapters in this short story plus the excerpt to the new book containing the prologue and 10 chapters. All written in Rick's usual style and cannot be put down until the end. It leaves readers with questions such as are the Russians ready for round 2? Does the Russian president get that date he seems to be after?
Clancy, this is not. Way too much telling and not enough showing. I lost count how many times the narration described before or after the actual conversation. Too much filler.As far as the plot, while it is intriguing, the execution comes across as flat. And, most importantly, this is only an unfinished short story.Disappointed to say the least.Three star push.
After a terrific start to this story, it turns out to be a short story “prequel†to another book available for purchase. Despite he author’s excellent ability to write about submarines and international politics, this felt like a bait-and-switch, giving readers a teaser to entice them to buy a full-length book. Very disappointed.
