Review
“Dauber recognizes the multiplicity of Jewish humour and wisely resists any single characterisation of it. . . . [He] deftly surveys the whole recorded history of Jewish humour.†- The Economist“Both erudite and breezy. . . . Dauber’s breadth left me breathless and his depth left me in his debt.†- Adam Rovner, Forward“From Kafka to Mad magazine, [Dauber] delicately mixes scholarship with comedy in what is an entertaining and even profound book.†- Booklist (Starred review)“Dauber pulls off the impressive feat of discussing humor without sucking the life out of it in this insightful and funny analysis of Jewish humor. . . . Dauber has provided . . . the gold standard for understanding what people of any ethnicity, nationality, or political persuasion find funny, and why.†- Publishers Weekly“An erudite survey of the evolution and distinctiveness of Jewish humor. [Dauber] offers . . . a wide-ranging and insightful cultural analysis.†- Kirkus Reviews“In this brilliant and groundbreaking book, Jeremy Dauber shows that Jerry Seinfeld and Sarah Silverman are just the latest members of an ancient tradition of Jewish humor that stretches all the way back to the Bible. Writing with dazzling scholarly insight and in a style as appealing as his subject, Dauber reveals what made Jews laugh over the centuries. In doing so, he tells a crucial part of the story of Judaism.†- Adam Kirsch, author of The People and the Books“This book is brilliant, endlessly revelatory, and Jeremy Dauber is that rare scholar and critic of real depth who doesn’t just make his subject accessible but animates it with the strength of his prose. He’s also one of the few writers I’ve encountered who can explain a joke without killing it. Bravo.†- Sam Lipsyte, author of The Fun Parts“You can’t understand comedy without knowing Jewish comedy―and you’ll find no smarter, more intrepid, and surprising analysis of the subject than in this book. From the Bible to Kafka to Seinfeld and beyond, Jeremy Dauber’s incisive wit and deep erudition makes Jewish Comedy an essential read for anyone curious about what makes us laugh.†- Jason Zinoman, author of Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night

More like a scholarly PhD thesis than a review for the general reader. Dry, but thorough. Not easy reading.
Long and, surprisingly, boring at times. It is truly an academic piece. As expected.
A few days ago my curiosity about all the million ways American humor comes from Jewish humor would not be quiet anymore and I thought to myself, surely some professor somewhere has written a history of the ways in which Jewish humor has developed in response to and in spite of the Jewish diaspora, antisemitism, quotidian life and love, and the new garbage far-right movements of politics. I searched "Jewish Comedy" and this is the book I was looking for. Very interesting.
A very well written, as it says 'serious' history of Jewish Comedy. Too serious, and often too much pretentious use of language, which required constant Wiki checks to verify meaning. It's obvious that someone smart wrote it, and there's nothing wrong with an exceptional vocabulary, but it detracted from the read. The 'comedy' is good. But I was expecting more representative examples of 'funny', rather than the scholarly employment of language to elevate the analysis. Granted, it is a 'history', and offers a bit more insight into our historic prevalence to humor as a survival skill...but...I'd prefer more of the humor, and less of the scholar. It improves once it starts dealing with the 20th century.
One supposes that a very erudite book could be written about “the orangeâ€. It’s history and it’s place among fruit of all kinds; it’s use in poetry and painting, and it’s varied and multiple facets. Then the fruit itself. Perhaps a chapter on its color, the discovery and history, through all ages, of the colors red and yellow, of their primacy, and how their mixture yields “orange†secondarily, and the possible meanings and implications of this. Perhaps a second chapter on the peel. How like, but unlike, skin and the metaphors and eroticism of skin. Then the sections, and the texture, and the juice...you get the picture. At the end of the day, in the excessive, idiosyncratic, and verbose dissection of the subject, you’ve dessicated the fruit so thoroughly that it has no flavor, no sweetness, indeed no “orangeâ€-ness. You have missed the essential “suchnessâ€of your subject. So it is with this book. Can there be a humorless book about humor? Surely, this book answers that question in emphatic affirmative. It stifles all humor in pseudo-insightful and unrelentingly eager efforts at being seriously academic and exhaustive. It is instead exhausting and finally, silly. To the extent that silliness is a component of humor, Jewish or otherwise, it succeeds. Perhaps that’s the joke!
Was a great gift for my 84yr old father.
Jeremy Dauber's history of Jewish Comedy is a tour de force. Yes, he's a brilliant scholar, but his book never loses sight of its appreciation and love of humor, as part of the human condition. His breath of knowledge and insights are staggering. For the ordinary reader, writings about humor generally are not very funny; but, Dauber's selection of topics and examples - including humor from biblical times to today's entertainment - is a real delight.
Scholarly, but boring.
