This series just keeps getting better and better. The characters are wonderful, the writing is outstanding and the plots keep you guessing to the very end! You can read this as a stand-alone, but to appreciate the full richness of the characters and their relationships, you really need to begin at the beginning.Stephen Lavender is a Principal Officer at Bow Street and he works with Constable Ned Woods in his investigations. Sir Richard Allison is a renowned physician who works with Bow Street on occasion. He is arrogant and expects to be treated like royalty whenever he deigns to work with Bow Street. So, imagine Lavender’s shock when Sir Richard requests his assistance on a case. It is right down Lavender’s alley. The victim, David MacAdam, was found in a room that was locked from the inside, the window was warped and couldn’t be opened and there were no other possible points of entry. It couldn’t be suicide because there was no murder weapon to be found.Suspects abound and the victim isn’t what he appears to be. None of the witnesses are telling the truth – some are outright lying and others are omitting vital pieces of information. Lavender definitely has his work cut out for him with this one. When a second victim turns up, it complicates the case even further. Of course, there are personal worries and complications as well – Lavender is awaiting the birth of his first child and Ned is concerned about his weight and takes extreme measures to fix it.The suspects will blow your mind – you have everything from aristocrats to con artists to loan sharks. What they get up to will keep you flipping the pages as fast as you can to see what happens next.Definitely a good read!

Ms Charlton requested reviews if we like the book. I hope she wants reviews if we love the book because this is perfection. The mystery is extremely well crafted, complex enough to keep the reader guessing, and gripping. Superb. What makes the story extra special are the human interest touches; so many, so heartwarming, so human nature. And even animals and babies. Oh my. This just couldn't be better written than it is. Charlton is a very talented storyteller who used her gifts to great effect. This book is "clean" and appropriate for teens. But it is wonderfully appropriate for adults. Nothing fluffy or simplistic here. I suppose it works as a stand alone but why would anyone want to miss the series?

I have read and loved all the books in this series and this is another wonderful story. Det. Lavender and Constable Woods are called to a house in Mayfair for a dead body behind a locked door. Turns out the man in the room was murder in the street some time before he returned to his lodging. Without adding spoilers, Lavender and Woods travel to a number of locations and talk to some very interesting characters including to sister newly back in Britain after spending most of their lives in India. As well as the dead man's wife and land lady. There are threads to the continuing series, but they do not distract from the main mystery. While this book is part of a series, the story is self contained and can be read without the other books, but you should consider reading the series because this is a wonderful series with great characters and dialogue.

It is difficult to explain why I like this series so much. Maybe it is because it always keeps me interested and lets me relax at the same time. Technically it is a light historical mystery/thriller taking place in 1812 England and describing the work of London police. I got very attached to the main characters and always look forward to reading more about them. And I love all bits of history interwoven into murder plots. The mystery plot in the current book is probably the best in the whole series. On the other site, the story does not include as many trinkets of curious historical information as earlier books. But this is fully compensated by the author’ note at the end.Not to spoil the main mystery but to wet a reader’ appetite I can just add that Constable Woods tries to lose some weight and Inspector Lavender is expecting a baby. All these (of course) while solving a very complicated murder case. Same as in the earlier books, there is a multitude of other colorful and intriguing characters belonging to all levels of British society. This is the 5-th book in the series but it can be read on its own. I love the author writing style and I am already looking forward to book number 6.

I had preordered this book and forgot about it. It was a true gift and a lovely read. I love Lavender and all the characters. The class system in England was appalling . I feel this book was well researched I look forward to the next installment.Thank you:

Again we have Lavender and Woods trying to solve a murder of a perplexing individual. I would like to say this is a most enjoyable book and story plot. Ms. Charlton weaves her characters and plot lines masterly into a very satisfying story. Just enough mystery and red herrings to keep you guessing to the end.

I have always enjoyed the Detective Lavender mysteries. I was particularly pleased with the length of this one. I had mentioned to Ms. Charleton that I finished the previous books so quickly that I felt like there was a lot of the story that was missing. I loved the ending😍

I like the characters in these mysteries. Lavender and Woods are set firmly in their Regency world. They have families who get involved in the stories and help on occasion. In this one, we learn more about Sir Richard - the doctor who helps L&W with cause of death on murders. He is not a favorite with them - very arrogant, but he's a good doctor and we meet his sister here. She is involved, with her friends, in solving the murder. I find the series worth reading.
