Item has almost all the common fish and many of the invertebrates found in the Virgin Islands.The card is approximately 4" x 6", is laminated on both sides, and has a single hole punched in the top to be used to attach to a lanyard or strap. The card is meant to be taken in the water while snorkeling or diving, and used as a reference when unknown marine creatures are encountered.Since many fish look completely different in the Juvenile stage than in the Adult stage, there are a few of the more common fish shown with Both pictures.The card is quite compact and can be easily stowed in a BDC pocket or attached to a Dive Slate.My only negative comments are1) the text is a bit small for all the data on the 4"x6" card and can be hard to read at lower depths due to less light at that level.2) after 1 week of dives (1 per day) and keeping the card tucked inside my rash guard top, the card de-laminated (that is, the two clear plastic layers separated from the colored paper interior that had the fish printed on it.I have another similar Fish ID card for Hawaii that is 6" x 9" . I prefer that size. The pictures are larger and the text is easier to read.I suggest buying these items BEFORE you take your trip, as they are cheaper online and you can study the pictures and familiarize yourself with the common fish prior to encountering them; however, you may want to take some glue and sealing the edges of this before submersing it in water. If you just want a splash-resistant card, this would be fine AS IS.
I purchased this for my girlfriend and I to use while snorkeling and diving on a trip to Barbados. The first one I received was for Turks and Caicos (I did discover that both ID cards have the same species). Amazon immediately resent a replacement which came quickly and was correct in that it said Barbados on it. However, it was badly delaminating in all four corners. I tried to re-laminate it with the heat from a hair dryer and I also tried ironing it (with a towel in between) and neither method worked and unfortunately I didn't have time to wait for another replacement before my trip. As soon as it got wet it began to delaminate further and curl up at the edges. It was cheap so I'm not too bummed, and I was able to buy a better one at the dive shop while in Barbados. The incorrect one was of good quality but the replacement was not so. So, two stars for this item but if I could give five for Amazon's customer service I would - on the rare occasion I've had to use them they've always been entirely accommodating.
Love this; taking a trip to Barbados and this will come in super handy for snorkeling. It's pretty tiny, about 3"x4", and the text is pretty small, so if you have vision problems, may not work for you.Has a hold to attach a lanyard or something. Could be referred to while snorkeling.
Well when you put 100 fish on a 4 inch by 6 inch card they are very hard to see. Well I should have known this going in. But anyway it was what it was. You need a good full sized book with one page per fish. It is waterproof and easy to carry. We saw lots of wonderful fish in St John.
Hard to read
My son recently moved to the Virgin Islands so I got him this card for Christmas before he left. He is now a kayak and snorkel guide at VI Eco Tours. He says the card is very useful and is very common there.
It is a handy little card to keep in your snorkeling bag. The only caveat is that it's a little hard to see some of the smaller fish. If I had it to do again I would probably look for one in a slightly larger size.
The pictures are fairly accurate, but small, and there is no sense of the relative sizes of the fish. Several creatures that I saw on my most recent visit to the Virgin Islands are not shown. Still, as a basic starting point reference it is okay.
